Hi, I’m Anu Joseph.
I’m a major foodie! I love cooking for fun at home for my family. From a young age, I was captivated by my mom’s ability to create delicious Sri Lankan dishes and her enthusiasm for exploring new cuisines she saw on TV. This passion for cooking was further fueled by watching iconic shows and chefs who left a lasting impact on my culinary approach.
I learned from my mom, who was an amazing cook. I also absorbed techniques and inspirations from various cooking shows over the years.
Shows like “Yan Can Cook” with Chef Martin Yan, “The Two Fat Ladies,” Jaime Oliver’s shows, “Parts Unknown” with Anthony Bourdain, Martha Stewart, Ina Garten, and Alton Brown have all influenced me.
My cooking style is inspired by a mix of Sri Lankan roots, TV chefs’ techniques, and my own food adventures. I love to recreate dishes I’ve tried at restaurants.
I grew up in Toronto and the GTA and attended post-secondary school in downtown Toronto.
I love the joy food brings to people, the adventure of trying new dishes, and the satisfaction of recreating restaurant favorites at home.
Welcome to Cookinganuway! My culinary journey began in my childhood kitchen, where I learned to cook from my mom. She was an incredible cook, specializing in Sri Lankan cuisine, and always eager to try new dishes she discovered on TV. Watching her experiment with flavors and ingredients sparked my own passion for cooking.
Growing up, I was an avid viewer of various cooking shows that significantly influenced my culinary style. Chef Martin Yan from “Yan Can Cook” introduced me to the vibrant world of Chinese cuisine, teaching me techniques like using cornstarch and water as a thickening agent. The charismatic duo from “The Two Fat Ladies” inspired my love for butter and indulgent cooking. Jamie Oliver’s approach to food—hands-on, creative, and unfussy—taught me that cooking is an art defined by personal taste and improvisation.
Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown” fueled my curiosity and desire to savor every culinary experience. Martha Stewart encouraged me to dream big and be fearless in the kitchen, while Ina Garten’s philosophy of finding joy in food, life, and relationships deeply resonated with me. Alton Brown’s technical insights rounded out my self-taught education, providing me with the foundational knowledge I needed to excel.
I am a self-taught home cook who loves recreating restaurant dishes at home. Growing up in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, and attending post-secondary school in downtown Toronto, exposed me to a rich and diverse food culture. I relish going on food adventures, discovering new eateries, and sharing these experiences with others. Watching someone take their first bite of a dish I’ve recommended brings me immense joy.
On most Friday or Saturday nights, you won’t find me at a party; instead, I’ll be exploring new restaurants or indulging in a bit of grocery shopping—my favorite way to unwind and immerse myself in the culinary world. For me, food is not just about sustenance; it’s about exploration, creativity, and sharing love and happiness with those around me. Thank you for joining me on this delicious journey through Cookinganuway!
